Our Postgraduate Certificate in Pharmacist Prescribing and Enhanced Clinical Skills* is for pharmacists who'd like to extend their professional role into prescribing and also gain enhanced clinical assessment skills.

Pre-requisites for the course are:

  • registration as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council or Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland
  • two years’ post registration experience in an appropriate clinical area
  • current practice in a clinical setting with evidence of continuing professional development.

* The availability of this course is subject to successful accreditation by the General Pharmaceutical Council in June 2018

Visas and immigration

This part-time course is not open to students who need a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK as the University only sponsors Tier 4 students to study on full-time courses.

You should have a lower second-class (2.2) undergraduate honours degree or above.

Course details

How will I study?

You learn in lectures, workshops and practical skills sessions as well as through online learning.

There are five weekend schools (Saturdays and Sundays at our Falmer campus) and one assessment day (Saturday). Provisional dates for 2018/19 are:

  • Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September 2018
  • Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 November 2018
  • Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December 2018
  • Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 January 2019
  • Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March 2019
  • Saturday 11 May 2019 – assessment day

Dates will be confirmed when you apply – they’ll be in September, November, December, January, March and May each year.

As part of the programme, you’ll undertake 90 hours of clinical practice under the supervision of your Designated Medical Practitioner.

You will have access to academic adviser and expert support services within the School of Life Sciences and the University. We support your Designated Medical Practitioner throughout the course, so they can give you the best possible experience.

Modules

The PGCert is made up of two modules:

  • Professional and Clinical Aspects of Prescribing* (45 credits)
  • Enhanced Clinical Skills (15 credits).

If you successfully complete the PGCert, you're eligible to apply for annotation of your GPhC registration* as a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber.

* The availability of this course is subject to successful accreditation by the General Pharmaceutical Council in June 2018
