Learn how successful organisations use psychology to understand consumer behaviour, and gain the skills to apply psychology in a business context. Consumer psychology is key to:

    • understanding buyer behaviour
    • enabling organisations to design innovative products
    • creating effective communication messages.

This course prepares you for careers building on both disciplines – whether you want to work in marketing, or apply psychological theories to the business world. Your studies culminate in a research project that bridges marketing and psychology.

Course details

How will I study?

In the autumn and spring terms, you’ll study a series of core modules and options.

In the summer term, you carry out your research project.

Assessment is through a combination of coursework, projects, examinations and presentations.

Modules

These modules are running in the academic year 2019/20. We also plan to offer them in future academic years. They may become unavailable due to staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of such changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.

Fees

UK/EU students:

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)

You may opt for student membership of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), which costs £65. If you choose to take a CIM qualification, you’ll need to pay a fee for both the assessment of your work (to CIM) and, possibly, for tuition in the areas not covered by this course (to a specialist external provider). CIM assessment fees vary between the different levels of qualification CIM offers. There are no exemptions for this course.

Applying Psychology in Business and Policy Contexts

Psychology is increasingly of interest in business and policy settings. This module provides you with insights from psychologists who have worked closely with business, government organisations, or charities, and places these within the context of psychological methods and theories. You will explore the benefits and difficulties of working with non-academic partners, but also have opportunities to creatively apply their psychological knowledge to novel business and policy contexts.

Branding and Marketing Communications

In highly competitive markets, companies must seek to differentiate their brands and to effectively communicate their value propositions to customers. Good communication is therefore a critical element in a company's efforts to build and maintain profitable customer relationships. This module aims to provide you with an understanding of the elements of the communication (promotional) mix, and to explain the use of major promotional tools, including advertising, public relations, publicity, sales promotion, direct marketing, and online and new-media marketing.

You will examine the current theories and practices of integrated marketing communications, and more specifically, explore the role of brands and the importance of integrated marketing communications in achieving brand objectives. As such, this module ensures that you will understand the strategic perspective to brand building and how this facilitates the development of the brand 'essence'.

Brand marketing communications strategies frequently cross geographic borders, and this module will equip you with analytical frameworks for developing marketing communications within both domestic and international/cross-cultural settings. You will be encouraged to consider different cultural interpretations of brand marketing communications/tools as well as the implications for marketing communications implementation in different socio-political and regulatory environments.

Buyer Behaviour

  • 15 credits
  • Autumn Semester, Year 1

This module is intended to develop your  understanding of theories and concepts drawn from research in marketing psychology and how these shed light on consumers' motivations and behaviours. You will address the individual, situational, environmental, inter-personal and cultural (sub-cultural) factors that shape consumer behaviour. You will also examine buyer decision-making stages (processes) and the extent to which the afore-mentioned factors influence buyer decision-making and behaviours. Through a focus on contemporary issues in buyer behaviour, and the challenges these may pose marketing managers, the course enables you to apply conceptual and theoretical ideas in marketing psychology to develop marketing strategies aimed at building and maintaining strong customer franchise. The module will emphasise understanding of the array of inter- and intra-influences on consumers and to encourage you to reflect and critically evaluate your own behaviours as a consumer. In addition, the influences will be presented in both a cross-national and multi-cultural national context, in order to encourage you to consider, interpret and demonstrate practical applications of course taught theories within broader or more diverse (national and cultural) settings.

Contemporary Applications in Consumer Psychology: Neuromarketing and Beyond

You focus on the psychology of consumers with respect to learning, memory, emotion, and biases.

You learn how new methods in neuromarketing help shed some light into the inner workings of the brain.

Techniques such as EEG, fMRI, eye tracking, and biometric measures will be discussed in the context of academic experimental design and industry applications.

Marketing Analytics and Metrics

Learn how to analyse marketing data, looking at both qualitative and quantitative data.

You explore how measuring success and monitoring analytics can improve the quality of marketing decisions. You learn to take a more evidence-based approach in marketing decisions, rather than relying on the preferences of decision-makers.

  • how to develop research questions, analyse data and draw inferences, with a view to making better marketing decisions

In this module, you undertake an independent research project.

You will be involved in the design and execution of a substantial piece of empirical research on a topic that is relevant to your course.

You need to critically survey and identify relevant theories and models and then to employ them to make recommendations for problem solutions.

The dissertation will consist of a research report detailing the project that has been carried out. 

Two briefing and preparation sessions will take place towards the end of the second term.

Digital Marketing

  • 15 credits
  • Spring Semester, Year 1

This cutting-edge marketing module discusses how digital media technology has changed marketing, and gives detailed strategies on how to embrace the online environment challenges. The main aim of this module is to provide you with a critical understanding of the key concepts, fundamentals and challenges of E-Marketing. This module explores the impact of the web on the traditional marketing mix of goods and services and examines the key ingredients of the online Micro and Macro environment. Moreover, E-marketing analyses online consumers' behaviour and their response to social media strategies and new technologies used by companies. The impact of electronic technologies on marketing strategy, market segmentation, positioning, and communication strategies is also addressed.

An emphasis is also placed on the utilisation of customer relationship marketing approaches within a dynamic online environment. Finally, online marketing strategy formulation and implementation within a changing technology environment is thoroughly described. By the end of the module, you will be expected to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas: the theoretical and practical importance of the e-marketing mix and its impact on marketing strategy; the online consumer behaviour and online decision-making process; various online marketing strategies for social media; strategic analysis of the online environment; online performance measurement.

Management of Negotiation

  • 15 credits
  • Spring Semester, Year 1

This module equips you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to manage the negotiation process at the tactical and strategic levels. Managing negotiations is inherently interdisciplinary and multi-functional, therefore the approach is integrative. Organisational, behavioural and psychological elements are studied together, with the objective of improving the effectiveness of negotiations.

The principal argument is that the main techniques are common to all negotiations, however organisational, behavioural and psychological considerations constrain choices and actions in specific contexts.

The module provides you with a broad understanding of the negotiation process and the development of negotiating strategies and tactics across a range of contexts. Conceptual foundations are studied and combined with role play and live scenario building (including video feedback), enabling you to formulate and explore ideas, and providing opportunities to extend your negotiating skills.

Marketing Ethics and Society

  • 15 credits
  • Spring Semester, Year 1

Understanding and appreciating the ethical dilemmas is an important dimension of marketing. Marketing, whilst an essential business activity, often attracts criticisms in terms of both its nature and its practices. The module covers perspectives for ethical and socially responsible marketing decisions as well as the ethical issues faced by marketers in marketing activities, such as developing products, segmenting markets, advertising and retailing.

This module looks at the criticisms levelled at marketing ranging from materialism and unsuitable consumption patterns, advertising to young and vulnerable consumers, promoting potentially harmful products, overlooking cross-cultural issues and the challenges of new media outlets and online issues, helping you to navigate the challenges and pitfalls present in a range of activities.

The module also explores the role of marketing in influencing consumers towards more sustainable and socially desirable behaviour.

Social Psychology of Consumer Behaviour

  • 15 credits
  • Spring Semester, Year 1

Consumer culture has become such a pervasive aspect of everyday life that it has profound social psychological effects. This module investigates social psychological processes underlying specific behaviours and outcomes, focusing particularly on consumers' identity and self-concept. It examines how consumers relate to their favourite material possessions, what motivates them to buy consumer goods, as well as predictors of excessive buying and the effectiveness of advertising. It also examines the influence of selected mass consumer aspects on individuals' stereotypes and well-being, including materialistic values, and the impact of advertising on stereotyping and body image.
