Antibiotic resistance, ageing populations and possible future pandemics – medicinal chemists are working on solutions to the major global challenges of our time.

If you’re curious about the drug discovery process and want to learn from industry experts, this is the course for you. On your MSc, you’ll:

  • learn about drug design and organic synthesis
  • develop the practical laboratory skills necessary to work in medicinal chemistry
  • gain hands-on experience in analysis and data interpretation
  • explore the importance of patent law in protecting novel approaches and developments
  • learn from industry leaders with experience ranging from start-up companies to big pharma.

At Sussex, you’ll learn from chemists whose world-leading research informs their teaching. We have strong links with the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre. In our high-spec laboratories, you’ll get to use the latest research equipment. This includes NMR spectrometers and x-ray crystallography diffractometers. As part of your research project, you’ll work closely with one of our research groups.

On graduation, you’ll be ready to work in an agile and fast-paced medicinal chemistry environment. You’ll have the knowledge and skills, as well as a network of contacts for your future career.

Find out more about the course from Dr Barny Greenland in an episode of the podcast Future You.

We understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision. We’ll make all reasonable efforts to provide you with the courses, services and facilities described in this prospectus. However, if we need to make material changes, for example due to government or regulatory requirements, or unanticipated staff changes, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.

Country exceptions

Select to see the list of exempt English-speaking countries

If you are a national of one of the countries below, or if you have recently completed a qualification equivalent to a UK Bachelors degree or higher in one of these countries, you will normally meet our English requirement. Note that qualifications obtained by distance learning or awarded by studying outside these countries cannot be accepted for English language purposes.

You will normally be expected to have completed the qualification within two years before starting your course at Sussex. If the qualification was obtained earlier than this, we would expect you to be able to demonstrate that you have maintained a good level of English, for example by living in an English-speaking country or working in an occupation that required you to use English regularly and to a high level.

Please note that this list is determined by the UK’s Home Office, not by the University of Sussex.

Course content

Your degree

On your MSc, you’ll gain the knowledge you need to start your career in the pharmaceutical industry as a drug discovery chemist. Your modules cover the theory and practice of drug discovery. And you’ll have the opportunity to spend the spring and summer terms in our drug discovery research laboratories working on your research project. This will give you hands-on experience in synthesising, characterising and discovering new molecules of medicinal chemistry interest.

Teaching

On your MSc, you’ll typically learn in:

  • lectures, where you’ll develop your knowledge of the theory of drug discovery
  • small-class workshops, where you’ll work independently and in teams to solve unseen problems
  • laboratories, where you’ll gain hands-on experience of life as a practising chemist in drug discovery
  • seminars, with external speakers in person and also online, which helps you get familiar with new ways of attending conferences.

30%: Lecture
70%: Practical

Assessment

Assessment typically includes:

  • completion of a portfolio
  • examinations
  • short written reports
  • presentations and coursework problem sheets
  • multiple-choice questions and quizzes.

You’ll also work on and deliver presentations. Your final thesis will describe the work completed during your Drug Discovery Research Project.

29%: Examination
28%: Practical
43%: Written assessment

Contact hours and workload

Your Masters year includes approximately 1,800 hours of work. This breaks down into about 180 hours of contact time in lectures, workshops and seminars; about 650 hours in the laboratory and about 970 hours of independent study.

Engage and actively participate throughout your studies to get the most out of your course.

Your modules

Core modules

Core modules are taken by all students on the course. They give you a solid grounding in your chosen subject and prepare you to explore the topics that interest you most.

Autumn teaching
Spring teaching
Spring and summer teaching

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.

We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown here.

Our experts

You’ll be taught by experts in their field, with strong links to the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre.

On your course, you’ll get to interact with external guest speakers from multinational and start-up companies. This diverse range of drug discovery professionals will help you build a substantial network of contacts – ideal to help you launch your career when you graduate.
