We look forward to seeing you on campus in September.
Hello, I’m here in our Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, one of my favourites places on campus. It’s just one of our buildings in the middle of our beautiful campus in the South Downs National Park and on the doorstep of Brighton, one of the UK’s most vibrant and colourful cities on the Sussex coast.
It is a lot quieter now than usual, but we are looking forward to the start of the academic year and welcoming thousands of students to the campus during Welcome Weekend in September. And you can be assured that our brilliant Estates and Student Support teams will have thought of everything so that Sussex will be a safe place to live and study for you. Your learning will be a blend of in-person teaching in classrooms, laboratories and remote learning - and if social distancing rules are still in place we will have set up all the safety measures that we need. This blended learning will allow you to discuss, debate and explore the subjects you choose to study with your lecturers and fellow students – offering a really modern way of learning.
There has never been a better time to study. Over the past few months you have experienced the most significant change to society, that people the world over, have seen decades. Now is the time to harness your experiences to find the answers to your questions and ignite your passion for learning to achieve your true potential by studying at Sussex.
Of paramount concern to us is your health and safety. It is our responsibility and we are putting all the measures in place, so you don’t have to worry. If you are in a classroom or the library, the right social distancing measures will be in place and we will have organised our spaces to ensure that everyone is able to move around the campus in a way that adheres to the guidelines. There will be an even greater emphasis on extra and more regular cleaning too. Of course there is a lot to think about, and we have a tremendous team of experts, including our very own scientists, who are making all this possible by looking at every single detail.
When we recently asked our staff and students what they feel is the most important value to define us, they unanimously agreed, it was the spirit of kindness. And it is with kindness that we will welcome all our students onto our campus and into our community next year. We know the past few months will have been difficult for so many of you and we will all be here to support you every step of the way.
So join us and be part of the next generation of University students who are ready to meet new people, discuss ideas and work together to create a better world.
