IELTS (Academic)
6.5 overall, including at least 6.0 in each component
IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. Your score must be valid when you begin your Sussex course. You cannot combine scores from more than one sitting of the test.
If you are applying for degree-level study we can consider your IELTS test from any test centre, but if you require a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for an English language or pre-sessional English course (not combined with a degree) the test must be taken at a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)-approved IELTS test centre.

If you are a national of one of the countries below, or if you have recently completed a qualification equivalent to a UK Bachelors degree or higher in one of these countries, you will normally meet our English requirements. Note that qualifications obtained by distance learning or awarded by studying outside these countries cannot be accepted for English language purposes.
You will normally be expected to have completed the qualification within two years before starting your course at Sussex. If the qualification was obtained earlier than this we would expect you to be able to demonstrate that you have maintained a good level of English, for example by living in an English-speaking country or working in an occupation that required you to use English regularly and to a high level.

Book bundles
We recommend buying textbooks for this course. These are available from the University bookshop, online and from other outlets. The approximate costs of buying new copies are £140 in year 1, £125 in year 2 and between £80 and £120 in the final year.
Statute books
We recommend statute books for some subjects. These are available from the University bookshop, online and other outlets for around £15 each.
Skills competitions
Students who take part in optional skills competitions need to cover associated costs. These costs include formal clothing, printing, book purchases, travel and food at competitions. The total cost depends on the stage reached and participation in external competitions. Excluding the cost of formal clothing the costs vary, but usually range from £5 to £30 for each competition stage.
Law Society membership
If you choose to become a Student Law Society member, you will need to pay £30 for three years of membership. The Student Law Society runs optional events and trips four or five times a year. Costs vary but usually range between £5 and £40 per event.

Law Ball
Tickets for the Annual Law Ball organised by the Student Law Society cost around £30. Attendance is optional.

Scholarships

Article 26 Scholarship
Full overseas tuition fee waiver plus £3,000 maintenance per year of study.
Care Leavers Award for Students Starting in 2019
£3,000 per year with an additional £500 in your first year of study.
EU Excellence Scholarship
You receive a £2,000 cash award, paid as two separate payments of £1,000.
First-Generation Scholars Scheme for Students Starting in 2019
£2,000 in your first year of study (Foundation Year or Year 1) if your household income is £25,000 or below. £1,000 in your first year of study if your household income is between £25,001 and £42,875.
In subsequent years all eligible students receive £1,000 if you are studying on the Sussex campus.
Sports Scholarships Scheme (Undergraduate)
Recipients of the scholarship can receive between £500-£1,250 per year as well as a range of other benefits.
Sussex Excellence Scholarship
You receive £2,000 cash maintenance during your first year of study.
You receive the scholarship during your first year, as two identical payments of £1,000. The first is paid in November 2019 and the second in March 2020.

You’ll be prepared – subject to completion of the necessary further qualifications – to practise law as a solicitor, a barrister or an in-house lawyer for a public limited company or a government agency.
