During this course, you have the opportunity to develop specific expertise in robotics alongside skills in mechanical engineering; making you employable by various sectors, from robot design and development to autonomous cars, robotics, automation, mechatronics, automotive, aerospace and renewable energies.

Our world-class research in robotics, dynamics and control, space systems, sensors, and flexible electronics informs our degrees to give you the best start in your career. You’ll study in our £12-million Future Technologies Labs, which provides a new space for building robots, and programming embedded systems, as well as state-of-the-art computer design and modelling suites. In particular, you will have access to our flexible manufacturing system, industrial robotic manipulator, humanoid robots, fleet of drones, autonomous vehicles, and a real-time motion monitoring system.

We have dedicated academic advisers to support you during you time at Sussex, as well as a team of student mentors. You’ll also be welcomed into our active, student-run engineering societies, and benefit from our partnerships with:

Accreditation

This course is currently unaccredited, however, we are seeking accreditation from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to meet in part the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer registration from the 2019 intake up to, and including, the 2023 intake, with backdating for the cohort intakes of 2017 and 2018.

    We’ll make all reasonable efforts to provide you with the courses, services and facilities described in this prospectus. However, we may need to make changes due to significant disruption, for example in response to COVID-19.

    We look at your full profile taking into account everything you are studying, including the high school graduation diploma, Grade 12 GPA, SAT tests and subject tests and/or ACT grades  We are particularly interested in AP tests and would ideally like to see three good AP scores.

    Advanced Placement Tests with scores of between 5,4,4 to 4,4,4 in three subjects.

    If you have taken the SAT reasoning tests we'd normally expect a combined score of at least 1300 and will look for around 600 in relevant subject tests.

    If you've taken the ACT we'd expect to see a composite score of at least 26.

    Modules

    This is a major/minor course, enabling you to study in depth in a core area (your major subject: taking up 75% of your time), while also exploring an additional area (your minor subject: taking up 25% of your time).

      Global Design Challenge

      You join all first-year students in the School of Engineering and Informatics in a team-based, week-long activity, the Global Design Challenge. Each team designs a solution to a problem faced by a community in the developing world. You develop transferable skills, benefiting both your studies and your future employability.

      These modules are running in the academic year 2021/22. We also plan to offer them in future academic years. However, we are constantly looking to improve and enhance our courses. There may be changes to modules in response to student demand or feedback, changes to staff expertise or updates to our curriculum. We may also need to make changes in response to COVID-19. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.

      It may not be possible to take some module combinations due to timetabling constraints. The structure of some courses means that the modules you choose first may determine whether later modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown below.

        Study abroad (optional)

        Employers value graduates who have negotiated their way in the world, experienced different cultures and developed an international perspective.

        You can choose to study abroad for a term or for a full year, depending on your course. We offer a huge range of destinations across Asia, Australia, Europe and North, Central and South America. Find out where your course could take you.

        Study abroad in Europe is supported through the Erasmus+ scheme, a European Commission initiative. As an Erasmus+ student, you can usually benefit from non-means-tested grants. Find out more at Erasmus+.

        Placement (optional)

        To help you gain experience and increase your employability, you can apply for an optional placement as part of your course. You’ll be responsible for applying for and securing your placement. Our dedicated careers team can provide you with information and advice. If you’re successful in obtaining a placement, this will form part of your course.

        Your time in industry develops your technical, team-working and transferable skills as you apply what you have learned in your studies to a business environment.

        A year in industry is a proven way to fast-track your career. Many students who undertake an industrial placement perform better academically on their return to their course and are more likely to secure employment as a direct result of their year in industry.

        Please note: If you’re receiving – or applying for – USA federal Direct Loan funds, you can’t transfer to the version of your course with an optional study abroad period in any country or optional placement in the USA if the number of credits for the placement/internship exceeds 25% of the total credits for your course.           Options

          Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. This list gives you a flavour of our options, which are kept under review and may change, for example in response to student feedback or the latest research.

          While it’s our aim for students to take their preferred combinations of options, this can’t be guaranteed and will be subject to timetabling. Options may be grouped and if so, students will be able to choose a set number of options from the selection available in any particular group.

            Gain the skills for a career in engineering, and benefit from our industry links with companies like Jaguar, IBM, Siemens and Thales. The technical, team-working and design skills you develop on this course mean you can go into graduate jobs in sectors including:

            • aerospace and energy
            • construction and manufacturing
            • automotive.

            You can also meet graduate employers at careers events. Recent sessions have included talks by IBM and Atkins, and advice on applying for graduate schemes.
