Design of Mechanisms and Machines (H7110)

Autumn teaching
On this module, you’ll explore design principles for mechanical engineering machine components.
You’ll focus on statics, stress analysis and materials choice in the design process. You’ll also cover the main types of mechanical components failure, as well as how to predict and prevent them.
You’ll cover:
- how stress and strain affect design
- mechanical design in manufacturing processes
- failure, reliability and safety issues
- the implications of these issues on costs
- the efficiency of machine components
- environmental problems.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
