In this module, you examine the relationship between ideas of culture, race and ethnicity, both historically and in contemporary society.
You'll study a range of empirical examples that demonstrate how the concepts have been used - sometimes separately, sometimes in interlocking ways - in political projects or movements. Particular focus will be placed on the construction of 'whiteness'.
Examples may include:
- the use of race in nineteenth century colonial administration
- the politics of ethnicity in post-war London
- the rise of the new right in contemporary Europe.

- Summarise and synthesise ideas and debates in the field.
- Place concepts in a comparative framework.
- Recognise the differences and similarities between concepts of race, ethnicity and culture.
- Engage critically with debates over the relationship between race, ethnicity and cuture and seek out and use electronic and paper-based information resources effectively.
