You will explore the politics of digital media culture, with a grounding in debates in feminist media studies to inform this.

Issues may include:

  • misogyny and sexism in digital culture
  • selfies, sexting and sexuality
  • new feminist movements and fan cultures
  • migration and mobiles.

The module engages debates about intersectionality, post feminism, heterosexuality, racism, violence and sexism across a range of media forms including mainstream mass media forms and alternative media production.

  • Systematically understand key challenges in feminism and digital culture
  • Critically assess contemporary challenges in relation to a longer history of debates in feminist media studies
  • Develop established techniques of inquiry to open up research questions
  • Demonstrate an ability to critically analyse an appropriate example of media texts or practices
