You will critically explore public relations (PR) as a strategic communication function, and discusses its role in contemporary societies. You'll evaluate key concepts and debates in this discipline and it assesses real examples of PR campaigns.

You'll also gain practical experience in planning public relations campaigns, based on a real life brief.

Weekly seminars may involve:

  • hands-on practice in designing and evaluating a communications campaign
  • analysing case studies
  • participating in class debates
  • contributions by experienced PR industry guest speakers.

You will build on your communication and report-writing skills, identify solutions to communication problems, and develop an in-depth, critical understanding of public relations theory and practice.

Module learning outcomes

  • Critically evaluate concepts, arguments and assumptions regarding the role public relations plays in society.
  • Frame appropriate questions and identify a range of solutions to problems relating to public relations theory and practice.
  • Apply methods and techniques learned in the module, to review, consolidate, extend and apply their knowledge and understanding, and to initiate, plan or assess a public relations project.
  • Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Exercise initiative, personal responsibility and decision-making.
