More than anything, my time at Sussex has opened up my world. I’m surrounded by staff and students with big hopes, big dreams and big ideas who help me realise what I’m capable of.” Amy Scott
Computing with Digital Media MSc

“I'd enjoyed studying computing all the way through school, but I wasn’t quite sure where it could take me. I grew up in a village in the South Downs, so I was already familiar with Sussex, but there was something about wandering through its open, green surroundings on an Open Day that just felt right.

Once I started my Computer Science degree, everything clicked. I took a first-year module on Multimedia which reminded me how much I'd always loved creative hobbies like photography – I’d spent every family holiday since the age of 10 snapping pictures of everything around me. I realised that computing could open up routes into the creative industries, and after discovering the Computing with Digital Media MSc, I knew I wanted to invest in postgraduate study.

My Masters has been amazing. I’ve explored topics ranging from game development and user experience to 3D modelling and TV production. My lecturers are so passionate and knowledgeable – they love what they do, and they genuinely want us to love their subject, too. The support of the Disability Team has also been transformative, helping me to access reasonable adjustments that have given me a much better understanding of how I learn best.

There's a real culture of respect between staff and students at Sussex. We’re trusted to use incredible facilities, which give us freedom to experiment and learn. I feel so lucky - even now, I walk into the studios and think: How did I get here? I’ve also enjoyed having access to DSLR cameras, podcasting equipment and the Mac Labs, which offer all the software you could ever need.

Sussex has helped me become much more confident, and I’ve thrown myself into opportunities beyond my course. I manage social media for Hack Sussex, and spending my weekends covering events like our Hackathon has helped me figure out what feels fulfilling professionally. I also manage social media for the Department of Informatics, work as a Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) tutor, and support undergrads as a Teaching Assistant, which has been so rewarding. I’ve even taken up rock climbing and tried the Cuban Salsa Society! Giving things a go has helped me discover – and rediscover - what I love.

Brighton is an incredible hub for the digital and creative industries, and seeing grads build careers with organisations like Unity Technologies makes those ambitions feel achievable. The practical experience I’ve gained means I’ll be leaving Sussex with a strong portfolio, and knowing those opportunities are right on my doorstep makes me even more excited about what’s next.

More than anything, my time at Sussex has opened up my world. I’m surrounded by staff and students with big hopes, big dreams and big ideas who help me realise what I’m capable of. I’ve found my people and my place here - and if you embrace every opportunity that comes your way, I truly believe you can find yours, too.”
