Maria’s story

Changemaking is challenging, but my Masters helped me to believe that it’s possible. I’m so proud to be a Sussex graduate and I carry its values with me wherever I go.” Maria Luz Casal
Sustainable Development MSc
Chevening Scholar
Senior Policy Advisor, WWF-UK
“Justice has always been my North Star. I began my career as a lawyer with an interest in environmental law, but I quickly became disillusioned – back then, it felt like many firms were just finding ways for polluters to keep on polluting. I wanted to build a better society, so I pivoted to public service in the city of Buenos Aires. I worked seven years on special projects that eventually led me to become Undersecretary of Social Development.
Reality is often more complex than policy design, but I believe we must confront societal challenges. With dedication and a focus on shared wellbeing, we can move beyond what divides us and build on what unites us.
I knew my purpose was tied to changemaking, but in order to make a greater impact, I needed to grow my knowledge.
I was considering further study when a colleague encouraged me to apply for a Chevening Scholarship. With over 50,000 applicants each year, the idea felt daunting. But the process turned out to be more than just competitive – it challenged me to reflect deeply on who I am and what I stand for.
I asked my network for advice on where to study and a friend told me: “Everyone should go to Sussex because it makes you a better person.” Alongside improving my knowledge, that was exactly what I wanted, so I accepted a place on the Sustainable Development MSc.
My Masters changed everything. I was encouraged to speak freely. I learned how to open both my mind and my heart. My tutors challenged me to question my beliefs in ways that led to real expansion and we still keep in touch today. I read their papers, we share ideas and I chat to current students about my experiences.
After graduating, I was determined to pursue projects that aligned with my values. I’ve collaborated with organisations including the Alan Turing Institute, National Geographic and now WWF-UK, where I work at the intersection of food, finance and farming. As Senior Policy Advisor, I focus on amplifying marginalised voices – because in a democracy, all voices deserve to be heard.
Changemaking is challenging, but my Masters helped me to believe that it’s possible. I’m so proud to be a Sussex graduate and I carry its values with me wherever I go.”
