This module, Co-ordination Chemistry, provides a complete description of the non-organometallic molecular chemistry of the transition metals.
The module includes:
- structure and bonding of coordination compounds
- aspects of symmetry
- inorganic reaction mechanisms
- applications of NMR to inorganic systems
- magnetochemistry.
Module learning outcomes
- Describe quantitatively and qualitatively the electronic spectroscopy and magnetochemistry of transition metal complexes
- Explain and describe the fundamental rationale for observed properties of transition metal complexes
- Describe the synthesis, structure, symmetry, magnetoelectronic and spectroscopic properties of a given transition metal complex
- Describe reaction mechanisms common to transition metal complexes with reference to synthesis and ligand transformations
