Chemistry
Symmetry, Bonding and Molecular Spectroscopy
Module code: F1702
Level 5
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Workshop, Lecture
Assessment modes: Unseen examination, Coursework
On this module, you’ll build on the quantum mechanical description of atoms and molecules. You’ll extend them (with the aid of group theory) to the ground and excited states of polyatomic molecular systems.
You’ll understand the electronic, vibrational and rotational states of molecular systems across the periodic table. You’ll also explore experimental ways of measuring transitions between these states, using high resolution spectroscopic techniques.
Module learning outcomes
- Apply group theory of symmetry to problems in molecular bonding and spectroscopy quantitatively and qualitatively.
- Describe experimental methods for collecting spectroscopic data from molecular systems.
- Interpret seen or unseen data from spectroscopic experiments on molecular systems in a quantitative and qualitative manner.
- Predict spectroscopic properties of molecular systems.
