Chemistry

Phases, Transitions and Reaction Kinetics

Module code: F1703
Level 5
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Workshop
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination

Build upon your understanding of the behaviour of chemical systems from previous modules.

You will apply equilibrium thermodynamics to systems undergoing phase transitions and examine the thermodynamics of mixing under varied conditions. You’ll aslo consolidate your understanding of how systems can be described and represented.

You’ll apply this knowledge of chemical kinetics to real-world systems, and examine complex reaction scenarios by applying kinetic models and approximations.

You will evaluate Collision Theory and Transition State Theory, examine the effect of temperature on chemical kinetics and apply kinetics to photochemical reactions.

Module learning outcomes

  • Understand the thermodynamics of phase transitions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of phase equilibria.
  • Identify and understand what is meant by ideal and non-ideal solutions.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of complex chemical kinetics.
