Structure Determination in Organic and Inorganic Chemistry

Module code: F1301
Level 5
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Workshop
Assessment modes: Coursework, Unseen examination

Explore modern and advanced elucidation methods of the structures of organic molecules, including NMR, MS, and IR.

You’ll focus on structure determination through inpterpreting the data each method provides, as well as assignment strategies.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamental methods to solve the structure of an unknown molecule.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the development and operation of the most relevant spectroscopic methods and instruments.
  • Read and analyse spectroscopic data and use it to solve unknown structures of inorganic and organic molecules.
  • Report data accurately and in detail in accordance with the requirements of scientific publishers.
