Small Change, Big Difference

Take part in our free Commit to Get Fit activities for staff throughout May.

To support you, we're providing free Sussexsport staff membership to participants from 1-31 May!

Our month-long Commit to Get Fit challenge has inspired staff to get more active for the past seven years and is a great opportunity to connect with colleagues across campus.

Our staff programme this May is about making small changes to your lifestyle that will improve you and your colleagues’ overall fitness, health and wellbeing. It is also a great opportunity to meet new colleagues, get to know your own team better and most importantly have some fun.

We want everybody taking part to be active for 150 minutes every week for the five weeks of the challenge.

To support you, we’ll be offering free Sussexsport staff membership from 1-31 May, plus more than 30 group exercise classes to attend: try mountain biking on the Downs, outdoor fitness and indoor cycling. Throughout the month we will also be running workshops and sharing information on how to improve and maintain your health and wellbeing.

Organisational Development (formerly SDU) will also be running Wellbeing Wednesdays throughout May. Find out more by checking out their programme and book onto their sessions using Sussex Direct.

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more information and updates throughout the month and get involved using the hashtag #SCBDSussex. And get some motivation with our top five tips for making the most of the month and beyond!

Our full timetable for the month is below, along with FAQs.

All events are free for participants; some activities require you to book via Eventbrite - so sign up as early as possible to guarantee your space!

FAQs

Can I take part as an individual, or do I need to be in a team?

In our experience, the month works better if done as part of a team so that you can motivate each other to try new activities or pair up and play sports like badminton. However, if you want to enter as an individual then this is no problem.

If you are the only one in your office or department wanting to take part, we can find you a team or you can enjoy the activities on your own. Teams can have as few or as many people as you like and most activities are suitable for group and individual participation.

How do I get my free Sussexsport staff membership and how can I use it throughout May?

To get your free month’s membership, you’ll need to email s.n.fuller@sussex.ac.uk with the full names of people on your team or your individual entry.

Once your membership is on our system, you’ll be able book badminton courts, table tennis, squash, tennis or any of the group exercise programme classes.  Subject to availability, you can also book halls for volleyball, basketball etc.

Your membership also allows you full access to both fitness rooms at the Sport Centre and the Falmer Sports Complex. Please leave bags in lockers when using the facilities, these are available at both sites and you can hire a padlock for 50p or bring your own.

Check out our current group exercise classes to find things you’d like to try.

How do I book facilities, such as classes and courts, or use the fitness rooms?

Your free membership will allow bookings to made SEVEN days in advance for group exercise classes and court bookings. You will also be able to book online, in person or by phone, just like our normal membership. If you are using the fitness rooms, please bring your staff card or some identification to prove it is you. If you’re already a Sussexsport Gold or Silver member, then you won’t need a free month’s membership.

To book classes and courts online you will need to go to the Sport Centre reception and have your unique online password created for you by our staff. Once you have your password, you can make up to seven bookings online in a 10 day period. Please note that if you need to cancel a booking, you must give 24-hour’s notice at all times.

Will there be special activites for staff as part of the month-long challenge?

We’ll have a number of staff-specific sessions throughout May, which will be available to book for free via Eventbrite, as well as some drop in sessions that do not require registration. These are available to book now, just take a look at the staff programme below and click on the link to register.

The sessions I wanted to do are full, or I can't make the times they're on. Can I book a class or session for my team at a different time?

We will do our best to accommodate this for you. We will always try to put on more sessions where we can. We will also be happy to try and set up additional sessions in other activities and talks to cater for your needs.

If you would like to do an additional session, please email us with the number of people interested, and some suggested times and dates. Please contact Terry Cooper at t.cooper@sussex.ac.uk.

What happens if I have a Sussexsport membership already?

If you already have a Gold or a Silver Sussexsport staff membership, you will have preferential booking rights - so please continue to use this membership for bookings for Sussexsport’s general class programme and to book courts.

If you currently have a Bronze membership, we recommend you upgrade to the free month-long Commit to Get Fit staff membership, as this will offer you fitness room use, classes and court bookings for free and extended booking rights.

Do all my team have to use the sports facilities?

No, the aim of the challenge is to set goals and make a commitment to improve your fitness and wellbeing.  Even if you don’t use the facilities, our staff are really happy to talk through your aims for the month and help with goal setting or any fitness programme.
