How could we cure cancer? How can we end the despair of Alzheimer’s? How can we protect rare species from extinction, or prevent epidemics from spreading globally?

This course sets you up to understand new discoveries. You’ll develop critical thinking, scientific teamwork and technical communication skills, alongside a solid grounding in biology. The degree is flexible, and it allows you to choose modules that fit broader interests and career aspirations. You can also choose to focus on areas such as cell and molecular biology or evolution and whole organism biology, and explore aspects of neuroscience and behaviour.

From Year 1, you’ll get hands-on practical experience in laboratories and in the field. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the beautiful surroundings of the South Downs National Park. Further afield, we offer inspiring field trips with destinations such as:

  • Wales
  • Ecuador
  • Portugal
  • Southern Africa.

At Sussex, our research has real-world impact. You’ll learn from experts tackling some of society’s biggest issues – from research into cancer treatments to the declining bee population. In your third year, you could have the opportunity to join a lecturer’s research lab and carry out your own project. In the School of Life Sciences, you’ll be supported by a friendly scientific community.

When you graduate, you’ll have experience of conducting experiments, statistical data analysis, and drawing conclusions from scientific evidence. This – combined with your data-handling and analytical skills – means you’re prepared for a career inside and outside of science. Biology is a route to many careers, in fields including:

  • the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries
  • healthcare
  • sustainability
  • scientific writing and communication.

And in addition, in your integrated Masters year, you gain a strong theoretical and practical foundation for a career in – or related to – research. You’ll spend a semester working on an individual research project in one of our Biology research teams. In this year, you’ll develop advanced skills in technical, analytical and scientific communication skills.

Our employability strand develops research skills, professional competencies, and includes dedicated sessions with our Careers and Entrepreneurship Team to help you bolster your CV, train for interviews, map out career trajectories, and more.

    Your degree

    In your first year, you’ll consolidate and extend your prior scientific knowledge to build a solid foundation in topics relevant to biology in the wider context of the biosciences. You’ll learn about the biology of natural systems at molecular, cellular and behavioural levels. You’ll be introduced to experimental methods, key quantitative and computational skills, and the principles of scientific reasoning. And you’ll explore the ethics of science within society, including the use of AI. You’ll have the opportunity to join a UK-based field course.

    Teaching methods typically include lectures and practicals, with some seminars. Depending on the modules you choose, you’ll get to spend time in the laboratory or in the field. These hours will be in addition to the breakdown below.

    Assessment methods typically include written pieces, reports, problem sets, online tests and multiple-choice question-based exams. You’ll also get the chance to practice presentation skills in a small group.

    This year of study includes approximately 1,200 hours of work. This breaks down into about 250 hours of contact time and about 950 hours of independent study.

    In your second year, you’ll deepen your understanding of central principles and experimental skills in biology. At the same time, you’ll develop your practical techniques and analytical skills via laboratory- or field-based practical classes, computer workshops and project work. This will develop your critical thinking skills and give you opportunities to put your analytical skills into practice using experimental data. Careers seminars will help you understand your employability skills, and internship and placement opportunities available to you. You’ll have the opportunity to join a UK-based field course.

    In Year 3 you’ll be able to specialise, choosing from a broad range of advanced topics taught by leading academics. You’ll develop graduate-level scientific skills that are crucial for your future career. These include critical analysis of primary research, science communication and innovation in scientific methods. Central to this year is an individual research project. You’ll be able to choose from a range of subjects and types of research methods, such as experimental wet-lab or field-based project, systematic literature review, computer-based data analysis or public outreach activity. You’ll have the opportunity to join an overseas field course.

    Teaching methods typically include lectures and practicals, with some seminars. Depending on the modules you choose, you’ll get to spend time in the laboratory or in the field. These hours will be in addition to the breakdown below.

    Assessment

    Assessment methods typically include written pieces, reports, problem sets, presentations both individual and within a group, group written submissions, online tests, a dissertation, and exams that require longer answers and analysis of data.

    Year 4 is dedicated to building research skills to Masters level. In your individual research project you’ll be immersed in one of our research groups, undertaking practical experimental or analysis work in a field- or laboratory-based project to address a hypothesis. To help you prepare, you’ll learn about a range of advanced research and statistical methods, and wider professional skills for research biologists.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. Note about additional costs

Additional costs to your tuition fees may include field trips, equipment, materials, bench fees or studio hire. These costs are best estimates based on current market values which we review each year. These costs may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances where the University has limited control such as a change in a service provider or government guidance. We will let you know at the earliest opportunity if there is any change to these costs. We will also tell you if these costs are mandatory for passing your course or optional. Field trips

You can choose to go on assessed field trips in Years 1, 2, 3, and 4, partially subsidised by the School. If you attend, you'll need to pay a daily £50 fee, the costs towards travel and, in some cases, subsistence and accommodation. Full payment is due by the end of week 2 of the term the field trip is running. Costs vary depending on location and on number of courses taken, but are usually around:

Year 1: Up to approximately £350
Year 2: Up to approximately £500
Year 3: From £800, up to approximately £2,000
Year 4: From £800, up to approximately £2,000
