This modules introduces different approaches in the study of non-western musical cultures. You’ll learn about methodologies borrowed from ethnomusicology and ethnography.

You’ll focus on particular case studies including, for example, Iranian pop music and Bollywood musicals.

Module learning outcomes

• Demonstrate understanding of essential features of non-western musical practices to inform critical perspectives on music
• Demonstrate an understanding of ethnomusicology and ethnographic approaches
• Analyse and critically evaluate texts (including musical recordings)
