This module will provide students with an introduction to the social, political, linguistic and pedagogic issues involved in the teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages and the principles and practice of a range of methods and approaches.

Module learning outcomes

  • Describe and evaluate the key theories of Second Language Acquisition and their relationship to language pedagogy
  • Apply the knowledge and understanding gained to the critical analysis of teaching materials and the planning and teaching of lessons
  • Identify the main lexical, syntactic, functional and phonological features of contemporary varieties of English and the issues they present for language learners
  • Draw up a range of lesson plans with clearly defined and realistic learning outcomes addressing a variety of needs
