The course covers the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing and aims to develop students' ability to communicate across cultures at upper-intermediate level in written and spoken English. It includes work on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and a range of reading and writing tasks. The course content will be according to Level B2 (Independent User) as defined in the Common European Framework.

Module learning outcomes

• Learners will demonstrate a high level of awareness of the relationship between the language and the cultures it exists in, and of the significance of register and style.
• Learners will also be able to produce a variety of types of written texts, such as letters of varying types and degrees of formality.
• Learners will also be able to develop their own interests in reading both factual and fictional texts in English, becoming increasingly autonomous and taking more responsibility for their own learning.
• They will be able to use English in a creative and flexible way, developing their skills in responding appropriately to unforeseen as well as predictable situations, producing a variety of types of appropriate responses, including extended and complex utterances.
• They will further develop their skills in adapting their language use to a variety of social situations, expressing opinions and taking part in discussions and arguments in a culturally acceptable way.
• Learners will be able to use the structures of English and a wide ranging of vocabulary with ease and fluency.
