Advanced Condensed State Physics

Module code: F3231
Level 6
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Workshop, Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework, Computer based exam

Building on condensed state physics, the nature of electronic and optical properties of solids will be further explored. The properties of semiconductors and their applications in devices will be addressed.

Pre-requisite

Pre-requisites:
Level 5: (F3239) Quantum Mechanics 1 [T2]
Level 6: (F3230) Condensed State Physics [T1]

Module learning outcomes

  • Ability to describe the electronic and optical properties of solids in terms of their band structure
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the behaviour of semiconducting materials and how this is used in devices.
  • Ability to describe the role of defects on various electronic and optical properties of solids.
