This module consolidates and extends the therapeutic approaches strand of BACY. It introduces a range of applications of talk, play and arts based psychological therapies. It critically engages with the theoretical frameworks and research that support different approaches to working therapeutically with children and young people in professional contexts.

It overviews psychodynamic, person centred and integrative theoretical constructions for working with the therapeutic relationship. It introduces play and art therapy, systemic, cognitive, group-work and mindfulness approaches and skills. It explores professional issues such as school-based counselling and multi-professional practice, working with families and children’s networks, supervision and safeguarding.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate critical understanding of the theoretical frameworks and research that support different approaches to working therapeutically with children and young people.
  • Critically evaluate the professional issues that arise when working therapeutically with children and young people.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the practical applications of different therapeutic approaches when working with CYP e.g. play therapy and their relationship with theoretical constructions.
  • Evaluate and communicate ideas and research effectively, clearly and fluently by written, oral and visual means, making effective use of ICT
