This module aims to provide you with a comprehensive grounding in the politics of contemporary Ireland. The module will introduce you to the key actors and institutions of the Irish political system. You will also explore academic debates on the changing politics of gender, class and religion in contemporary Ireland. Focus will be placed on the transformation of the Irish political economy, as well as on Ireland’s changing relations with the EU, and with the UK. Although the focus is on the Republic of Ireland, the module will also examine the history and legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict.

Module learning outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of the key institutions, actors, and issues in contemporary Irish Politics.
  • Locate and evaluate academic literature related to a particular topic in Irish politics.
  • Identify and research a key issue or question related to Irish politics.
  • Experience of conceiving and producing a substantial work of analysis and argument, presented in accordance with professional scholarly standards.
