Design for Manufacture for Product Design

Module code: H7134
Level 5
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Seminar, Laboratory, Class
Assessment modes: Coursework

This module introduces you to the principles, methodologies and techniques of the best practice known in the Engineering and Product Design disciplines as 'Design for Manufacture.' Through this module, you will gain exposure to concepts of industrial engineering, operations management, materials and processes, product design, quality control, and sustainability.

In addition, you will gain an understanding of how these factors have an impact on the manufacturing feasibility of a product. Topics covered include: tolerancing, process capability, production types, product design specification, rapid manufacturing, industrial standards, sustainable design, technical drawing, cost estimation, and project planning.

Module learning outcomes

  • Recognize product design cost drivers related to manufacturing while appreciating the cost implications of different production volumes.
  • Generate a Product Design Specification (PDS), design reports, and present ideas in a rational and coherent manner.
  • Work effectively as part of a group.
