This module introduces you to a number of significant critical frameworks which shape our understanding of culture, politics and society. It is designed to encourage you to think about – and apply theoretical positions to – the related fields of drama, theatre and performance. Key skills you’ll gain include:

  • essay writing
  • collaborative presentation skills
  • expanded knowledge of how to theorise performance.

  • Locate critical theories in their historical and cultural contexts
  • Analyse and evaluate the applicability of different critical theories to performance
  • Engage in critical dialogue with theorists' ideas
  • Apply critical theory to more specific theories of drama/theatre/performance
