Sussex Modernism

Module code: Q3283
Level 6
30 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Seminar, Tutorial *, Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework

This is a critical-creative writing module, where you’ll experiment with, and analyse, different ways of writing about place.

Sussex is particularly rich in modernist histories. You will interpret, and take inspiration from, experimental literary texts and artistic works created in the region during the 20th century. We encourage exploration of regional archives, museums, galleries, landscapes and the built environment.

You will:

  • investigate links between surrealism and psychogeography
  • conduct local history research
  • reflect on lesser-known cultural histories of the region
  • sharpen your understanding of what’s at stake when representing place today.

We support you through experiential learning opportunities to help your professional development. This supports your transition from your degree into employment.

Module learning outcomes

  • Produce creative and critical writing which engages with the local area.
  • Show critical awareness of how writing and the arts might effect how places are imagined or engaged with, drawing on relevant scholarship and examples.
  • Utilize archives, museums, galleries, landscapes, or the built environment to research regional histories and cultures.
  • Analyse literature, art, or other cultural forms produced in the region
  • Reflect on the history or legacies of modernism in critical or creative writing
