Digital Archives: An introduction to Omeka
Tuesday 1 July 0:00 until 0:00
University of Sussex Campus : Sussex Humanities Lab (opposite SB211) Silverstone Building
Speaker: Sharon Webb & Nic Seymour-Smith
Part of the series: Digital Methods Accelerator Summer Camp

In this workshop, Sharon Webb and Nicolas Seymour-Smith will introduce participants to Omeka, an open publishing platform designed for digital cultural heritage collections and archives. Using Omeka S, we will run through some of the basic concepts, such as metadata, items, and collections. Using existing digital archives, which have been supported and developed by the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab, we will demonstrate some features and provide you an opportunity to upload a heritage item of your choice.
There are no pre-requisites or prior knowledge needed for this workshop, however, participants are asked to bring a digital image of a "heritage object" - this could be personal, political (the personal is always political), historical, related to activism, etc. - that they would like to describe for an archive. This task will help us to both think about questions of heritage, and of the practical elements of digital archiving.
Examples of Omeka sites that SHL Digital have been involved in, include:
- Queer Heritage South
- Feminist Approaches to Youth Sexuality Archive (Reanimating Data Project)
- Full Stack Feminism Archive
The workshop is open to Sussex researchers at all levels - please register using your @sussex.ac.uk email address. Refreshments will be provided.
This workshop is part of The Digital Methods Accelerator (DMA) Summer Camp 2025, a series of in-person taster workshops 30 June-3 July aimed at Social Sciences and Humanities researchers at all levels wanting to explore and skill up on digital methods for their research. The DMA Summer Camp will cover the whole research data lifecycle with sessions planned on each stage of the cycle.
