1-) I am interested in the sociology of work and employment in Japan. My focus has been especially on the employment and Human Resource Management practices of foreign employers, and on whether these firms introduce any elements of change into the Japanese workplace. A key theme in my published work has been the managerial careers of women, which appear relatively more open but still constrained with foreign employers in Japan.

2-) I am currently involved in a survey study with a major foreign retailer operating in Japan. The company has introduced some practices that are fundamentally different from the norm, most notably an abolishment of the different rates of pay and employment contracts for regular and non-regular workers. The survey aims to find out how the employees feel after the implementation of these radical changes.
