This module will take a theoretical and critical view on central issues in employment.

It is designed to explore and evaluate recent legal developments in the field, to engage with academic and policy debates.

A central aim is to explore the role of labour market regulation in light of the key challenges to legal regulation of labour markets, such as the influence of global economic pressures, the growth ofprecarious and ‘non-standard’ forms of work.

It will also highlight the philosophical foundations of employment, and explore modern challenges such as the relevance of human rights in, and neoliberal pressures on, the workplace.

Module learning outcomes

• Identify key challenges in the contemporary regulation of the UK labour market;
• Systematically understand key aspects of employment and discrimination law in its social, economic and political context;
• Comment on and critique the key academic and policy literatures;
• Critically evaluate the various positions in the debates on the contemporary evolution of the field.
