This module explores a specific topic in African American literature in depth. Due to the advanced nature of the module, topics will vary according to instructor availability. Topics may include: slave narratives and neo-slave narratives; the Harlem Renaissance; the Chicago Renaissance; contemporary African American fiction and/or poetry and poetics; African American and African diasporic speculative fiction; Toni Morrison; James Baldwin; the Black Arts movement.

  • Apply knowledge of literary and historical concepts in the reading of a range of African American literature
  • Critically analyze how specific works of African American literature use literary form
  • Critically analyze how specific works of African American literature engage relevant historical contexts
  • Independently identify and research relevant questions relating to African American literature
