Economics

Applied Mathematics for Economists

Module code: L1058
Level 4
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Seminar
Assessment modes: Coursework, Take away paper

The aim of this module is to deepen your understanding of the most important mathematical techniques used in economic analysis through the use of applications, and to enable you to use these skills confidently and independently.

The module will also help you to understand both the economic principles you are (or will be) applying in other modules on the Economics course. You will also understand the mathematical principles that underlie the statistical and econometric methods encountered in other modules later in the BSc course.

Module learning outcomes

  • Evaluate appropriateness of mathematical tools to economic problems
  • Develop arguments using mathematical notation and terminology to address economic problems
  • Structure coherent arguments and proofs using the formalised language of mathematics.
  • Differentiate between mathematical methods and be able to apply them appropriately.
