International partnerships

International Partnership Development Fund

Under its International Partnership Development Fund (IPDF), the University supports a number of schemes to strengthen strategic global engagement and networks and promote the internationalisation of teaching and research.

The IPDF supports the development of sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships that enhance the quality of teaching, learning and research. The IPDF currently finances the following programmes, in addition to providing funding for faculty to work with institutional partners to develop new teaching faculty exchange, set up international collaborative programmes, form research collaborations and other strategic projects.

Global Excellence Summer Programme

Run by International Partnerships in collaboration with Sussex Abroad, the Global Excellence Summer Programme provides outstanding opportunities for Sussex undergraduates to study abroad during the summer period, with the aim of strengthening ties with institutional partners, promoting - and widening access to - study abroad and providing exceptional language and cultural experiences. In 2016, the programme placed over 100 Sussex students at leading institutional partners for undergraduate research and taught language, cultural and academic programmes. Host universities have included Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Humbodt University, Nanyang Technological University and Utrecht University.

International Junior Research Associate (IJRA) Study in Japan presentation

Run by International Partnerships in collaboration with the Doctoral School, the International Junior Research Associate (IJRA) scheme is a pioneering project that aims to develop future research leaders. The scheme supports talented and ambitious undergraduates from institutional partners in undertaking supervised research at Sussex during the summer, providing them with the opportunity to engage with distinguished researchers and develop invaluable academic skills and networks. Where possible, research placements are identified that connect students with Sussex faculty involved in collaboration with the partner institutions. Since 2014, students have been hosted from institutional partners in China, Ghana, Nigeria, Thailand, Malaysia, Russia, Hong Kong and the United States.

International Research Partnerships and Networks Fund (IRPNF)

Developed by International Partnerships and Sussex Research, the International Research Partnerships and Networks Fund (IRPNF) invites applications from University Research Centres, Research Centres and Regional Research Centres to build strategic global partnerships and networks, with a view to enhancing research quality and impact. The Fund is designed to facilitate significant research programmes that should be sustainable after the initial period of funding. Seven awards have now been made under the fund.

Student Mobility Partnerships Fund

One of the University’s key goals for Teaching, Learning and the Student Experience in the Strategic Plan is that all students will have the opportunity to individualise their learning by taking part in study abroad and/or professional placements. This has led to ambitious targets for outward student mobility. This scheme was established by International Partnerships to enable faculty to establish new links (or further develop existing ones) for exchange, summer schools or short study/field trips, with the aims of substantially increasing the number of Sussex undergraduate students who study abroad, creating graduates with an international outlook and enhancing the international reputation of the University and its Schools. The scheme complements the work of Sussex Abroad, which currently works with over 150 exchange partners. Seven awards were made for 2015/16 in the first round.
