Study International Development Studies at Sussex

The University of Sussex uniquely teaches International Development across five different places.

The consistent top world ranking position (QS WUR) in Development Studies applies to relevant postgraduate courses in each of the following:

Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU)

The Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) is one of the world’s leading centres of research on science, technology and innovation policy and management.

SPRU has a global impact on decision making for sustainable futures and is internationally recognised as a pioneer in the field.

It offers a range of interdisciplinary Masters courses and welcomes students from a wide range of backgrounds.

Sussex is renowned for its location next to the South Downs National Park and its close proximity to Brighton:

  • Beautiful campus in a national park, convenient and close to the vibrant seaside city of Brighton and one hour from London
  • Brighton was ranked the most hipster city in the world (Movehub 2020), based on the number of record shops, vintage boutiques, vegan restaurants and coffee shops
  • Brighton is regarded as one of the most progressive cities in the UK, with a number of NGOs, charities and grassroots organisations based in Brighton. This makes it an ideal place to be located if you are planning to study within the field of development studies.

Brighton has many Asian restaurants and supermarkets, including Fortune Oriental Supermarket and Yum Yum Oriental Market.

  • Myung-rae Cho – Minister of Environment (2018-present). Studied Geography at Sussex in 1992
  • Chang-rip Byun – Vice-President, MBC Broadcasting Corporation (2017-present). Studied Digital Media at Sussex in 2004
  • Byung-je Cho – Chancellor, Korea National Diplomatic Academy (2017-2018). Studied Politics/International Relations at Sussex in 1986
