Why choose this course at Sussex?

What holds societies together? How does populist politics divide them? How can we build solidarity in diverse communities? Studying politics and sociology at Sussex allows you to consider these pressing questions as well as gaining real-world experience.

On this course, you will gain in-depth insight to how societies work, which forces drive them, and how change happens. You will explore how wealth, technology, crime and gender shape societies and politics.

Learn from academics who are experts in their field and advise NGOs and governments. You will build practical experience through:

  • integrated internship options with one of our partners in Westminster, political consultancies or the private sector
  • work-shadow political experts such as our Political Writer-in-Residence, the Times' Chief Political Correspondent Aubrey Allegretti
  • masterclasses where, amongst others, Nick Garland, former adviser and speechwriter to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, will tell you the secrets of wowing your audience
  • dealing with data and building the skills employers are looking for, for instance via our digital or video accelerator programme.

Outside the classroom, there are even more ways to get involved. The student-run Politics and Debating Society gives you the chance to question leading politicians like Green Party MP Siân Berry and former Conservative MP Rory Stewart.

You’ll get to hear ground-breaking research via the Philosophy Society, or take the opportunity to present your own theories at the Undergraduate Research Day. You can also hear from Sussex alumni who have gone on to work in journalism, NGOs, and the private sector.

Other opportunities include exciting fieldtrips. Options include visiting Berlin where you can meet politicians in the German Bundestag and see politics in action.

You’ll study for this degree on our campus, joining our academics and fellow students. Combined with in-person contact time, digitally supported educational resources, library collections and independent study, this course is designed to give you an inclusive education.     Text: The Spirit of Sussex Award is an exciting new programme designed to recognise and celebrate the things you do outside your course.

    Participating in the Award makes it easy and fun for you to get involved and make the most of university life.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.

We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown here.

Writer-in-Residence Scheme

Aubrey Allegretti, experienced political journalist and current Chief Political Correspondent at The Times, is our Political Writer in Residence.  

In this role, Sussex alumni Aubrey will deliver a number of writing workshops as well as a guest lecture for Politics students. He will also judge a political blog writing competition, contribute to our student-run Sussex Politics blog, and organise work shadowing days in London. This experience will give you the opportunity to develop your skills as a political writer and to become an outstanding political communicator.

If you have the Goakao, we will consider applications for direct entry to first year. You would normally need an overall average of 75%, including required subjects.

We are also pleased to consider applications if you are following a recognised International Foundation Year or you have one or more years of Higher Education in China at a recognised degree awarding institution.

The Senior High School Graduation alone would not be sufficient for entry to our undergraduate degrees, but you may be eligible to apply for our International Foundation Year. If you successfully complete an International Foundation Year, you can progress on to a relevant undergraduate course at Sussex.

We look at your full profile considering everything you are studying, including the High School Graduation Diploma, Grade 12 GPA, SAT tests and subject tests and/or ACT grades and AP tests. We expect to see a combination of these qualifications.

Alongside your High School Graduation Diploma, we would ideally like to see 3 good AP scores with either, a combined SAT test score (evidence-based reading and writing and mathematics) of 1300, or a combined ACT score of 26

Associate degrees

An Associate degree with a GPA of 3.0 will meet our entry requirements for year 1.

Foundation Year entry

Students who have a High School Diploma and SAT or ACT tests only would be eligible to apply for our Foundation Year

Ghana Senior Secondary School Certificate

If awarded before 1993: grades 1-6 in English language.

If awarded between 1993 and 2005: grades A-D in English language.

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE)

 Level 4, including at least 3 in each component in English Language.

Indian School Certificate (Standard XII)

The Indian School Certificate is accepted at the grades below when awarded by the following examination boards:

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) – English Core only: 70%

Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) - English: 70% or Grade 3

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)

English A or English B at grade 5 or above.

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education

Grades A – C in English

Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) 119/GCE O-level

If taken before the end of 2008: grades 1-5 in English Language.

If taken from 2009 onwards: grade C or above in English Language.

The qualification must be jointly awarded by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).

West African Senior School Certificate

Grades 1-6 in English language when awarded by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or the National Examinations Council (NECO).

If you are a national of one of the countries below, or if you have recently completed a qualification equivalent to a UK Bachelors degree or higher in one of these countries, you will normally meet our English requirements. Note that qualifications obtained by distance learning or awarded by studying outside these countries cannot be accepted for English language purposes.

You will normally be expected to have completed the qualification within two years before starting your course at Sussex. If the qualification was obtained earlier than this we would expect you to be able to demonstrate that you have maintained a good level of English, for example by living in an English-speaking country or working in an occupation that required you to use English regularly and to a high level.

In 2025/26, fees for Home students and Channel Islands and Isle of Man students are £9,535 per year. The University of Sussex keeps fees for Home students and Channel Islands and Isle of Man students in line with UK Government-approved levels. These have not yet been confirmed for 2026/27. In line with our terms and conditions, the University charges fees at the maximum levels set by the UK Government.

Additional costs to your tuition fees may include field trips, equipment, materials, bench fees or studio hire. These costs are best estimates based on current market values which we review each year. These costs may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances where the University has limited control such as a change in a service provider or government guidance. We will let you know at the earliest opportunity if there is any change to these costs. We will also tell you if these costs are mandatory for passing your course or optional. Westminster internship travel costs

This course has an optional internship in Westminster in the spring term of the final year. Travel costs are around £600, or lower if based in the constituency. Spaces for the internship are limited.

Field trip (if module is chosen)

This course has an optional trip to Berlin in the spring term, costing up to £250.
