Into the Lions Den: An Exploration (A) (L3022A)

On this module, you’ll explore the concept of violent extremism. You’ll reflect on some of the considerations behind why people join these networks and engage in acts of violence. You’ll focus on the 2010 comedy Four Lions, directed by Christopher Morris.

Although a fictional film, Four Lions is considered an accurate representation of aspects relating to people’s engagement in violent extremism, including:

belonging
identity
existential attractions
peer pressure
subculture.

The seminars will consist of watching a portion of the film and then discussing the core themes in relation to important research, literature and theories in the field.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
