Spring teaching

The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to classical sociological theories and theorists and issues arising from their work.

We’ll cover classical sociological theory from its origins in the Enlightenment period to the post World War II period. You’ll look at these broad movements of thought with a focus on specific theorists and a close reading of extracts from classic texts. You’ll acquire an in-depth knowledge of the work of major classical sociological theorists.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
