Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science

Work experience placements

Training the next generation of consciousness scientists is a key goal of the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science.  We host a limited number of work experience placements to students who wish to pursue a career in this area. Previous placement students have gone on to pursue PhD programmes and have also co-authored papers in high-profile journals.

Applicants need to be Master's level or above and self-funded either personally or as part of a grant obtained at their home institution.  Please note that placements need to align with current research projects at the Centre; we are not able to supervise independent projects alongside our own Master's and PhD students.

***Please note that we currently cannot offer paid internships***

  2. Please secure at least one academic reference, which can be inlcuded with your CV or sent separately.
  3. Send the above to Marianne Cole: mlc38@sussex.ac.uk, ensuring that you confirm in the email:

Further information

  • All applicants must show that they have the appropriate permission/permit to complete a work placement with us, whether they are current students at another UK university or international. General guidance on visas and immigration for international students is available from the Academic Registry office or by email: immigration@sussex.ac.uk. The UKISA is also a useful point of reference.
  • Information on exchange schemes for international students is available from the International Office.  Please contact this office to confirm if your home institution is in partnership with the University of Sussex before contacting us. The application process is normally then led by the International Office.
  • Current University of Sussex students may be eligible for the Junior Research Associate scheme or to complete a short placement if their postgraduate course allows.  This scheme has its own application process.
  • Please note that we can only host a very limited number of placements per year.
