The Library offers workshops and events designed to help you develop essential research skills. Whether you're a student, a researcher, or faculty our sessions provide opportunities to explore advanced research techniques, critically evaluate information sources, learn about open research and engaging with AI for research.
Understanding copyright and Creative Commons licenses
This session will cover the basics of UK copyright law and how this impacts what you can use in your work and how you can share the results of your own research. It will introduce concepts such as rights retention and fair dealing and will provide guidance on how to seek permission to reuse third party content in your publications.
The workshop will explain what Creative Commons licences are and how they can be used to protect and share your work.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
- identify the key copyright principles relevant to academic research
- evaluate how and when third-party materials can be used legally in a research output
- understand how to license your own work, including Creative Commons options
- understand the University's approach to publishing and copyright retention

Propose an exhibition or event
We welcome proposals from University of Sussex colleagues to co-produce exhibitions and/or events in designated spaces in our buildings. If you wish to propose or design an exhibition for spaces within the Library and any associated digital or event activities that accompany an exhibition, please complete the Exhibition and events application form and submit to us by uploading below.
Applications should be submitted with at least six months’ notice for exhibitions and three months' notice for events in advance of the proposed start date and require relevant sign-off at Associate Dean, Executive Dean or Director of Professional Services level. This application should be completed in conjunction with the Exhibition and Events process document.
