Our Foundation Year in Mathematics is ideal if you want to pursue a degree in mathematics, but your qualifications do not meet the entry requirements for a three-year course.

You’ll learn from experts involved in real-world research projects in pure and applied mathematics. You thrive on a well-supported Foundation Year that has been running for over 10 years.

After completing your Foundation Year, you choose which direction to take your degree in. You can focus purely on Mathematics, or study the subject alongside Economics, Finance or Physics.

China

Typical offer

We usually do not accept Senior High School Graduation for direct entry to our undergraduate courses. However, we do consider applicants who have studied 1 or more years of Higher Education in China at a recognised degree awarding institution or who are following a recognised International Foundation Year.

If you are interested in applying for a course which requires an academic ability in Mathematics, such as a Business related course, you will normally also need a grade B in Mathematics from the Huikao or a score of 90 in Mathematics from the Gaokao.

Applicants who have the Senior High School Graduation may be eligible to apply to our International Foundation Year, which if you complete successfully you can progress on to a relevant undergraduate course at Sussex. Typical offer

We look at your full profile taking into account everything you are studying. You must have your high school graduation diploma and we will be interested in your Grade 12 GPA. However, we will also want to see evidence of the external tests you have taken. Each application is looked at individually, but you should normally have one or two of the following:

  • APs (where we would expect at least three subject with 4/5 in each)
  • SAT Reasoning Tests (normally with a combined score of 1300) or ACT grades
  • and/or SAT Subject Tests (where generally we expect you to have scores of 600 or higher). 

We would normally require APs or SAT Subject Tests in areas relevant to your chosen degree course.

IELTS (Academic)

6.5 overall, including at least 6.0 in each component

IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. Your score must be valid when you begin your Sussex course. You cannot combine scores from more than one sitting of the test.

If you are applying for degree-level study we can consider your IELTS test from any test centre, but if you require a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for an English language or pre-sessional English course (not combined with a degree) the test must be taken at a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)-approved IELTS test centre.

Course information

How will I study?

You develop your basic mathematical skills and understanding. Modules consolidate Mathematics and Further Mathematics A-level topics, including concepts of proof and logical argument.

You’re introduced to statistical and computing applications, many of which relate to business models. Two projects allow you to explore mathematics that interest you. Each module has a number of lectures each week, supported by regular workshops in a smaller group.

Module assessments contain coursework such as problem sheets, short exams, presentations, and written examinations.

Fees

Fees are not yet set for entry in the academic year 2018. Note that your fees, once they’re set, may be subject to an increase on an annual basis.

Foundation Mathematics

This module covers the mathematics required for progression to year 1 of courses in physics, engineering or mathematics. You cover algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus (differential and integral), vectors, complex numbers and series. Including:

  • Algebra: algebraic relationships. Equalities and inequalities. Remainder and factor theorems. Factorisation. Quadratic equations. Partial fractions. Indices and logarithms.
  • Geometry and trigonometry: revision of some Euclidean geometry. Cartesian coordinates and straight lines. Inequalities and regions. Basic trigonometry. Trigonometric relationships. Compound angles.
  • Calculus 1: (differentiation) basic differentiation. The product and quotient rule. Function of a function. Differentiation of parametric forms and implicit functions. Second order differentiation and turning points.
  • Calculus 2: (Integration) basic integration. Standard integrals, integration by inspection, by substitution, by parts, using partial fractions. Definite integrals. Solution of first order differential equations by separation of variables.
  • Coordinate geometry 2: polar coordinates.
  • Vectors: addition and subtraction. Decomposition and resolution. Scalar and vector products.
  • Complex numbers: Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Complex roots of quadratic equations. The Argand diagram.
  • Series and approximations: permutations and combinations. Arithmetic and geometric progressions. Binomial theorem. Maclaurin's and Taylor's theorem.

Further Mathematics

  • 60 credits
  • Autumn & Spring Teaching

This module develops essential elements of mathematics, concentrating on the fundamentals of algebra, calculus and geometry. The module is broadly equivalent to an A-level Further Mathematics course concentrating on these elements.

Project

  • 15 credits
  • Spring Teaching

You produce two projects- 3,000 words and 6,000 words, on subjects of your own choosing, possibly from a list of suggested titles.

Statistics and Decision Mathematics

  • 15 credits
  • Autumn Teaching

This module will cover some basic ideas of decision maths, probability and statistics, with an emphasis on applications in management. We will cover algorithms such as critical path analysis and linear programming. There will be a discussion of probability, looking at simple discrete and continuous distributions, and an introduction to statistics, covering descriptive statistics, regression and time series.
