Explore the ways that political change has led to European integration becoming increasingly politicised through the growth of Euroscepticism.

Taking a comparative approach, we look across Europe to consider trends and variations. You’ll consider:

  • how Euroscepticism plays out in domestic politics of European states
  • public opinion on European integration
  • the party politics of Euroscepticism
  • the effects of Euroscepticism on policy and politics, including the case of Brexit.

Module learning outcomes

  • Be able to account for the changing politics of Euroscepticism in European states
  • Develop an argument based on academic sources in an organised and structured way
  • Critically evaluate and use appropriate theories or approaches to the study of politics to account for the politics of Euroscepticism
  • Demonstrate the analytical skills required to carry out independent and original research related to the politics of Euroscepticism
