Feminism and the Politics of Gender

On this module, you’ll explore the central themes that have occupied 20th and 21st century feminism in theory and political practice. You’ll establish a dialogue between philosophical writings and activist politics. This will help you examine issues such as subjectivity to care, labour and digital technology through a feminist lens.

You’ll engage with each issue from an intersectional and global perspective to gain a nuanced understanding of the complex ways in which gender, sex, sexuality and power interact.

Seminars will provide you with the opportunity to link feminist scholarship to a broad range of contemporary debates, including:

  • reproductive justice
  • trans issues
  • representation
  • misogyny
  • gender-based violence.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate understanding of the key ideas, arguments and lines of contestation in feminist political philosophy.
  • Identify key concerns, events and actors in feminist politics in the UK and globally
  • Locate and evaluate academic literature related to a particular topic in feminist scholarship or feminist activism.
  • Identify and research a key issue or question related to feminist politics or the politics of gender.
  • Demonstrate experience of conceiving and producing a substantial work of analysis and argument, presented in accordance with professional scholarly standards.
