About Liberal Arts

Sussex Liberal Arts is a unique degree for the UK, combining a set of compelling, closely linked, and innovative core modules with a carefully curated range of complementary options from across the University. The degree is a response to the needs of the world we live in – an example of the New Humanities.

We focus on how knowledge, practical skills, and the real world interact, and develop confidence and a capacity for wellbeing in the students who take it. Differing from the American model of Liberal Arts adopted by most UK institutions, which emphasises breadth of choice, we reimagine Sussex’s rich tradition of inter-disciplinary learning and social engagement for the 21st century, empowering students to leave university with the tools they need to change the world for the better.

Employability sits at the heart of our degree. We equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and direct experience of real-world situations they will use to thrive across a variety of professional contexts. Central to this are our External Advisory Board of twenty professionals from across the public sector, NGOs, broadcasting, the arts, communications, activism and education, who play an active role in curriculum design, and our Partnership Network of businesses and organisations with whom student projects will be co-created.
