The Keep (University of Sussex Special Collections)

Outside view of The Keep record centre

The Centre for Early Modern and Medieval Studies is proud to enjoy a close relationship with The Keep, a state-of-the-art, purpose-built archive centre a short walk from the university campus. The Keep holds not only the entirety of the University’s Special Collections, but also the archives of Brighton and Hove and East Sussex County Councils, and projects including the Mass Observation Archive, and the British Library’s Unlocking Our Sound Heritage.

The collections here date back to the twelfth century, and manuscript collections such as the Travers bequest house a number of important and rare medieval and early modern texts.

CEMMS has used the unique space at The Keep to host events such as a symposium on the Early Modern Qu’ran, of which there is a notable copy in the archive, and will continue to do so in the future.
