Second-year students from the Business and Management course recently brought their ideas for real-world sustainability challenges to the heart of UK policymaking, as part of the Year 2 Leadership Foundation, led by Alison Bailey.
Working in teams, students developed credible, scalable sustainability solutions to address challenges at the University of Sussex and Brighton. Over the semester, they refined their ideas with the support of experienced business mentors, strengthening their leadership, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
The project culminated in student presentations to Members of Parliament and business leaders at the Houses of Parliament and the House of Lords, with a panel led by Lord McNichol. The teams received excellent feedback on both the quality of their ideas and their professional delivery.
The initiative was delivered in partnership with Rupert Pearce from Rewired Earth and supported by a range of industry mentors. One student, Ashwin Walankihar, is continuing to work with his mentor Eniko Balla, CEO of BMAC International, following the project. Nick Turton from Zoonou, who mentored three teams, also attended the presentations to support the students. Additional mentoring was provided by Demi Heath from Hearth Sustainability and Jason Brooker from Govia Thameslink Railway.
Congratulations to all students involved for demonstrating collaboration, leadership and sustainability in action.
