Spring term 2017 courses

Courses are available to all on campus and a Sussexsport membership isn’t required to register. The courses are designed to be progressive in nature and allow participants to develop their practice or skill over a block of weeks.

All courses must be booked and paid for in advance. Visit the Sport Centre or Falmer Sports Complex reception, or book your place over the telephone using your debit/credit card. Contact the Sport Centre on 01273 678228 or Falmer Sports Complex on 01273 877125.

Monday

Basic Ballet: 4pm-5pm

Basic components of ballet technique for co-ordination and suppleness incorporating short dance sequences. A course at both introductory and elementary levels.

Taster sessions: Monday 30 January and Monday 6 February

Dates: Monday 13 February - Monday 24 April (10 weeks)

*Please note there will be no class on Monday 17 April for the Easter Bank Holiday.

Student course fee: £35.00

Tuesday

Trapeze (beginners): 2pm-3pm

You will learn skills on the trapeze, rope and silk with a qualified aerial practitioner in a supportive environment. A great way to keep fit, develop strength and destress while having fun.

Taster sessions: Tuesday 31 January and Tuesday 7 February

Dates: Tuesday 14 February - Tuesday 25 April (10 weeks)

*Please note there will be no class on Tuesday 18 April for the Easter Bank Holiday.

Friday

Ballet Pointe: 4pm-5pm

Graduation from basic ballet course, or equivalent, required. This course is for those who have previously danced on pointe as well as those who are currently dancing on three quarter pointe and are preparing to go on pointe.

Dates: Friday 3 February - Friday 28 April (12 weeks)

Student course fee: £42.00

Swing: 5pm-6pm

Lindy hop is the earliest form of Swing Jive. It can be danced to almost every style of music and has an emphasis on improvisation. Other Swing era dances include Charleston, Shag, Balboa and Blues.

Dates: Friday 17 February - Friday 28 April (10 weeks)

Saturday

Ballet Intermediate: 11.30am-12.30pm

This course offers a step between the basic ballet and ballet pointe work.

Dates: Saturday 4 February - Saturday 8 April (10 weeks)

Taster sessions

Unsure if you want to sign up for a course? You can sign up to one of our taster sessions to see if a course is for you. Each taster session is priced at £3.50 for Sussex students. Please note that signing up to a taster session does not guarantee you a place on the course. Taster sessions are unavailable for Ballet Pointe, due to the additional weeks in the course length.

Refunds

If you find you have a lecture or commitment that clashes with a course that you have signed up for, we will give you a full refund providing you let us know at least 24 hours before the course commences.

Course notes

  • Drop-in sessions are not offered on courses.
  • Courses will be cancelled if there are insufficient numbers, so please book in advance to ensure that the course you are interested in runs.
  • Once you are signed onto a course, please come to reception before each session and ensure that your name is ticked off the course register.
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and if you have any injuries or problems then discuss these with the instructor before the class.
  • Do not arrive late for a course as the warm up is a vital part of the session and helps prevent injury. Entry to the class will be denied if you are more than 10 minutes late. 
  • We ensure that all teachers are fully qualified and experienced. However, all participants take part in any activity at their own risk.
