English Language and Linguistics

Dr Lynne Cahill (or Dr Roberta Piazza) will introduce you to the degrees in English Language and Linguistics and English Language and Literature. Addressing questions such as, What is Language? and What is Linguistics?, this 30-minute talk explores the wide range of exciting questions our degrees address, from the structure of the smallest parts of language up to the ways we use language to influence others. One of our final year students will also be present to answer any questions you have about life as a student.

English Language and Linguistics taster lecture

What is a word?

In this 30-minute lecture we explore one of the fundamental building blocks of language: words. We consider questions about the difference between counting the words in a ditcionary and the words in an essay, how new words come into a language, what kinds of elements combine to make words and how the answers to those questions are different in different languages.
