English taster lecture

Romanticism and Childhood

This 30-minute lecture from Dr Hannah Field looks at how two Romantic poets—Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth—represented one of the period's central themes: childhood. How do attempts to access or draw down the ways of seeing, thinking, and feeling peculiar to childhood (to adapt Jean-Jacques Rousseau's phrase) feature in their poetry? What does it mean for one group (adults) to write about another group (children)?
