In this module, you’ll explore the role of education in social development and transformation in the Global South.

You’ll learn key educational theories and policies, applying them to different contexts, including country, region, school and groups of learners.

Focusing on Education For All, you’ll examine:

  • the institutional architecture
  • its economic indicators
  • the global agencies involved in governing and delivering education
  • the impact of increasing privatisation of schools and services.

The module also covers how social exclusion affects access to education, transition and classroom processes – particularly for children with disabilities, school drop-outs and girls. You’ll explore how this supports a closer examination of education, as well as alternative approaches within informal schooling.

Other topics of study include:

  • curriculum construction
  • pedagony and assessment
  • how they link to national identity, language and inclusion
  • the role of teachers
  • teacher education and governance
  • education’s interaction with conflict
