This module gives you the chance to practice and reflect on reading and writing approaches, developing an excellent foundation for the rest of your Sociology degree.
You’ll read contemporary published criminological work and take part in critical discussions with your peers. Alongside a variety of texts, you’ll focus in depth on one book, reflecting on:
• writing styles
• constructions of arguments
• and evaluations of evidence.
You’ll also encounter critical thinking techniques.
Module learning outcomes
- Understand and demonstrate the key skills required for study at university including the nature and qualities of critical reading and writing.
- Evaluate sociological research on the basis of a detailed and critical reading of published work.
- Produce written work that critiques the content and conclusions drawn from data presented in an empirical study.
